What are viruses and firewalls?

A firewall is a form of internet security that acts as a digital barrier between your computer and the internet. It can monitor incoming and outgoing traffic to and from your computer and block traffic that comes from suspicious or unsecure sources. This means that it can prevent hackers and viruses from gaining access to your computer, keeping you and your personal data safe.

We strongly advise Internet users to install and use a firewall on every device that uses the internet. It is especially important for Virgin Media broadband customers to install a firewall as their Internet connection is ‘always on’.

Viruses are computer infections that can damage your computer and destroy your documents. They can be downloaded onto your computer through email attachments as well as picked up from websites.

You can also enforce Parental Controls on your devices to block certain content and unsecure websites. You can even set a schedule for each of the users on this device to enforce these rules at certain times of the day.

How to use Virgin Media Internet Security?

Virgin Media Internet Security comes with some great features, such as Parental Controls and safe Banking. Our protection software can be installed on your mobile devices too, so you can stay internet safe even when you’re on the go.

Parental control has three pre-set profiles that limit the web content in different ways. Teenagers can have more freedom to browse the internet, while small children have tighter restrictions on their online activities. The adult age group can browse the internet without limitations.

If the parental controls were not turned-on during installation of the product, you can turn it on as follows:

  1. Select the Menu button in the upper-right hand corner and select Parental Control

  2. Enter your password and select OK

  3. Select your chosen age group

  4. If you want to view and change blocked categories, tap the arrow next to the age group

  5. Select the content you want to allow. Once you’ve selected the age group, Parental Control will allow access accordingly

Note: When you turn on Parental control, it clears your browsing history.

If you’ve forgotten your password or would like a new one, you can reset it yourself in a few short steps.

  1. When you login in and are prompted to give your security code, select I have forgotten my security code

  2. Once the security code reset window opens, select OK

  3. An email will be sent to your registered address

  4. Open the email and follow the instructions

  5. Set a new security code through the Anti-Theft settings and store it carefully

Note: You can use the Virgin Media Internet Security Key application to keep your passwords safe. Alternatively, you can contact Virgin Media Internet Security support on 020 3936 3621

This feature protects your online banking sessions and transactions by blocking connections that are not necessary for online banking – either when you access your bank’s website or make online payments. This helps to protect your personal data online, especially your banking details.

To turn Banking Protection on:

  1. Select the Windows user account that you want to edit and select Settings

  2. Select Banking Protection

  3. Select the button in the top-right corner to turn Banking Protection on, or off if you change your mind

  4. Select OK to turn this on for the chosen account

If you want to keep your current internet connections open when accessing online banking, select Do not interrupt my active internet connections

Virgin Media Internet Security is a complete security program, so it is not recommended to run several security applications on your device. This can affect the performance of your computer.

During installation, Virgin Media Internet Security will look for conflicting or older security software programs running on your machine and prompt you to remove the software.

Virgin Media Internet Security will always ask for your permission before removing any software, but we do advise that you follow the on-screen instructions throughout the installation process. You can also remove conflicting software manually via your Control Panel and Add/Remove Programs.

Note: Allowing Virgin Media Internet Security to be installed in conjunction with a conflicting security application may leave your system vulnerable to online threats.

If you are unable to resolve an issue with Virgin Media Internet Security yourself, please contact Virgin Media Internet Security support on 020 3936 3621.

A Browsing Protection block page appears when you try to access a site that has been rated harmful by your security software.

If you want to enter the website anyway, you can unblock it:

  1. Select Allow web site

  2. Windows User Access Control asks you to confirm this action

  3. If necessary, enter your administrator account information and confirm the change

Note: Choosing to override your software’s decision to block a harmful website can put your computer at risk. Be careful when deciding which websites you want to allow access to.
