What is Device Authentication?
Device authentication is a quick and easy way to sign in to your My Virgin Media account, without needing a password. It uses FIDO2 authentication, which generally works with your face or fingerprint.
What are the benefits?
Fast - There’s no need to remember complicated passwords – once you’ve registered your device, you can sign in quickly and easily (usually with your face, fingerprint, passcode or PIN)
Secure - Your sign-in is unique, never leaving your device and never being stored on a server, preventing common security risks like password theft or phishing
Simple - You won’t need to sign in as often and you’ll automatically have access to new features
How to register for Device Authentication
Just sign in to your account from a compatible device you want to use, and you’ll be asked if you want to register for device authentication. Make sure you’re using a personal device, not one that’s shared or is available to the public (like a library computer, for example).
How to de-register or change a device’s nickname
You’ll be able to see all your registered devices in your My Virgin Media account. From there, you can remove or rename any of them in a few simple steps. For your security, the number of devices you can register is limited. Click on Account settings below and select Device authentication to see or change your devices.
FAQs
Why can’t I register for Device Authentication? You’ll only be asked to register if device authentication is compatible with your device. It might not be available on some older models. You’ll also need to make sure you’ve enabled your device’s security. Supported platforms include Windows Hello, Android OS 7.0 or later, MacOS, and iOS 14 or later.
Why is my authentication failing? Try de-registering your device and then setting up device authentication again. If that doesn’t work, there may be an issue with your actual device. In this case, you can simply switch back to signing in with your password.
There’s a device registered that I don’t recognise. What do I do? If you don’t recognise a device, remove it from your list immediately and check our advice on security for what to do next.
