The Retail Price Index (RPI), published monthly by the UK government’s Office for National Statistics measures the rate of inflation by assessing the average change from one year to the next in the prices of a representative sample of goods and services purchased by typical households in the UK.
Our annual price adjustment uses the January RPI rate announced by the Office for National Statistics in February each year, plus an additional 3.9% which is applied at the same time. If the RPI rate is 0% or negative, we’ll only apply the 3.9%.
We always balance our prices with the need to invest in our network, so we can provide all our customers with the best products and services. Like many businesses, we’re experiencing rising costs, which is why we review our prices each year. At the same time, we’re seeing growing demand for data, so we need to invest in our networks to keep up with customer demand.
We’ll publish the relevant RPI rate on our website as soon as it’s available in February each year. We’ll also let you know the exact percentage increase by email or letter before April.
You’ll then see your new price on your bill from your April billing period onwards. You can easily check your bills on My Virgin Media.
The first example below shows a scenario using the RPI rate announced in February 2024. The second scenario shows a customer on an 18 month offer with RPI rates for 2025 and 2026 that are illustrative only.
Scenario 1
Bob has a contract with Virgin Media and his monthly subscription charge for his main services is £40 a month. In February 2024 the RPI rate was announced as 4.9%. In April 2024, Bob’s price would have increased by 8.8% (4.9% + 3.9%). Bob’s monthly subscription charge would have increased from £40 a month to £43.52 a month (£40 + 8.8% = £43.52).
Scenario 2
Lisa signs up to a new contract in August 2024 and her monthly subscription charge for her main services is initially £40 a month with a standard price from month 19 of £50 a month. If the RPI rate announced in February 2025 is 5% (example only), Lisa’s monthly subscription charge would increase in April 2025 by 8.9% (5 + 3.9%). Lisa’s monthly subscription charge would increase from £40 a month to £43.56 a month (£40 +8.9% = £43.56). Lisa’s standard monthly charge from month 19 would also increase from £50 a month to £54.45 a month (£50 + 8.9% = £54.45).
If the RPI rate announced in February 2026 is minus 1.5% (example only), we would apply a 3.9% increase. Lisa’s monthly subscription charge for her main services would increase in April 2026 by 3.9%. Provided Lisa hasn’t entered into another contract with a different price, Lisa’s monthly subscription charge would increase from £54.45 a month to £56.57 a month (£54.45 + 3.9% = £56.57).
You’ll see changes on your bill from your April billing period onwards. If you have recently joined or recontracted and we have informed that you that your annual price rise will take effect from April 2025, you will not receive a price rise in April 2024.
If you have a discount on your package, we’ll take it into account and the annual price adjustment will be applied to the eligible discounted price. Unless we’ve told you otherwise, the annual price adjustment for main services will apply to the monthly subscription price you’re paying at the time and to the monthly subscription price payable after your discount expires. Please see the above example of how your main services price could change.
Your main services are the services in your core Broadband, TV and/or Home Phone package. Your main services are set out clearly for you in your contract forms and/or monthly bill.
Add-ons are additional services you may have chosen to get in addition to your main services. They don’t form part of your bundle and you can cancel them at any time by giving 30 days’ notice. Your add-ons are set out clearly for you in your contract forms and/or monthly bill.
Although add-ons are excluded from the annual RPI+3.9% price adjustment, the price of add-ons are still subject to possible change either by us, or by the provider of the service where you contract directly with them. We’ll let you know in advance if we make changes to the price of any add-ons you may have chosen.
The annual price adjustment doesn’t apply to Essential broadband, Essential broadband plus, and Talk Protected plans, which are available to certain qualifying customers. If we increase the monthly subscription price of these packages, we’ll give you at least 30 days’ notice in writing and let you know your right to cancel.
The annual price adjustment also doesn’t apply to Flex, admin costs (e.g. paper billing) and any other out-of-bundle charges (e.g. non-inclusive calls). These charges are still subject to possible change either by us (where we provide the service), or by the provider of the service where you contract directly with them. We’ll let you know if you have a right to cancel if we make changes to these charges.
If you have a service that’s supplied by a third party and is subject to their terms and conditions (e.g. Netflix Add to Bill), we aren’t responsible for any changes made by them to those services, charges or terms and conditions. Neither are we responsible for letting you know of these changes as they are outside of our control.
