Love a really great horror film that keeps you scared for the entire running time, and then lingers in your brain for days afterwards?
Buy Hereditary now on the Virgin Media Store. Cert 15
If you do, and if you don’t want to sleep any time soon, you’ve found the right movie with Hereditary. It’s a film that mixes suprising shocks with psychological depth, gross-out gore and some good, old-fashioned drama, and now it’s crept on to the the Virgin Media Store.
The set-up makes it look like a classic family drama. As we meet the Grahams, Annie (Toni Collette) is struggling with grief following the death of her mother, with the support of her psychiatrist husband Steve (Gabriel Byrne). They appear to be a loving family, living in a gorgeous house in a beautiful woodland setting, but something’s a bit off…
For one thing, their children are behaving oddly. Peter (Alex Wolff, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle), who’s 16, seems to be coping with loss, but 13-year-old Charlie (Milly Shapiro in her film debut) is acting strangely. Very strangely. Is this just teenage angst, or is there something sinister going on? Well, no spoilers, you’ll have to watch it to find out – but we can tell you that this is a seriously scary and disturbing view of family life from first-time director Ari Aster. It’s also one of the best horror films of the year. Maybe the decade.
If you’re brave enough, Hereditary’s not the only scary movie available to buy on the Virgin Media Store this October. Our horror collections include plenty more spooktacular action – and we’ve got some great Halloween offers too, so read on if you dare…
Halloween (1978) and pre-order Halloween (2018)
You can pre-order the latest Halloween film and brush up on the classic 1978 version for the ultimate scare factor. Michael Myers, the iconic masked monster from John Carpenter’s original movie, graces 2018 with his spooktacular presence once again when he escapes from Smith’s Grove Sanitarium. It’s now 40 years on from Michael’s attack on Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) – she certainly didn’t forgive and he certainly didn’t forget…

Look out for the horrifying, yellow-eyed Valak the nun (Bonnie Aarons), who also appears in 2018’s prequel The Nun.

John Krasinski is no longer known as just Jim from the American version of The Office thanks largely to this modern horror, which he co-wrote and directed. Krasinski also stars with his real-life wife Emily Blunt, playing parents in a post-apocalyptic world who must keep themselves and their four young children safe from extra-terrestrial creatures. If they hear you, they hunt you…

Rush hour is scary enough without adding zombies into the mix. South Korean horror Train To Busan exploits this fear – you’ll never want to set foot near a train again. A man and his daughter take a journey from hell as zombies find their way onboard. It soon becomes a race to catch the train to Busan (hence the title!), which is one of the few places left to run to. It’ll leave you running through those doors when the announcement says: “Alight here!”

Marin Crane (Janet Leigh) is a secretary who impulsively steals thousands of dollars and goes on the run. After a brush with law enforcement, she seeks refuge at the Bates Motel, owned by Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins). His penchant for taxidermy and worrying mama’s boy tendencies land Marion in one big Freudian nightmare… The shower scene, accompanied by the bone-chilling shriek of violins and cellos, quickly elevated this Alfred Hitchcock film to cult status, and it’s a seminal work in the horror genre. If you’ve never seen Psycho, make it your Halloween viewing this year.

What’s not to love about this sumptuous supernatural drama? Based on Anne Rice’s novel, Interview With The Vampire chronicles the life of 18th-century lord Louis de Pointe du Lac (Brad Pitt), who is disillusioned with life and vulnerable to the wiles of Lestat de Lioncourt (Tom Cruise). Lestat persuades Louis to choose blood-sucking immortality rather than death, but Louis comes to hate his shadowy eternal life – until Lestat introduces a newly turned vampire recruit (Kirsten Dunst) into the dysfunctional family dynamic…

There’s more to horror films than scares – sometimes they can leave you shaking with laughter! With Shaun (Simon Pegg) and his pretty useless best friend Ed (Nick Frost) to the rescue during the zombie apocalypse, at least they give you a giggle along the way as they slay the marauding undead. Shaun is used to working the 9-5 grind at an electronics store, so surely protecting his girlfriend and mother from the evil dead is kind of a promotion?
