It’s time to soothe your achy bakey heart and get bready to crumble, because, at last, the nation’s favourite show is back!
The Great British Bake Off, Tuesday 27 August, 8pm, Channel 4/HD (CH 104/141). Also available for 7 days in Catch Up > Channels > All 4
Britain is about to be gripped by a fever – a baking fever. Nope, it’s not another heatwave on the horizon, but weeks and weeks of delicious baked goods, a few tears (as well as tiers), hugs and plenty of gentle joshing. That’s right, The Great British Bake Off is returning to our telly screens.
And not a moment too soon, frankly. It seems like years since mild-mannered university researcher Rahul Mandal won series 9. (Incidentally, if deeply shy Rahul had written this preview, he would be telling you that you hated it by this point.) Now we’ve got another cast of amateurs heading into the famous tent in Newbury, all hoping to win, um, a… cake stand? Hey, it’s not about the destination, but the journey.
Like every year since its big-bucks move to Channel 4, Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig will be ringmasters during the whole circus, bringing a light touch to counter those moments when people fall to pieces over a batch of underwhipped meringues. (It sounds like we’re being flippant, but those things are HARD to get right!) Meanwhile, the famous Paul Hollywood will again stalk the corners, his blue eyes beating down on the contestants like a wolf in the night, while Prue Leith stands tapping away at her phone, making sure she definitely deleted Twitter this year.
It’s set to be another series that dominates every waking moment of our national conversation, with more memorable moments than there are layers in a Victoria sponge. And honestly, we can’t wait, because we are ALL IN for this series.
But who will emerge the breadwinner? Who will put mind over batter? Will anyone be a gluten for punishment in the tent? We can’t tell you what happens this series (it’s on a purely knead-to-know basis), but rest assured, it’ll take your bread-th away. We’ll stop before this all gets a bit stale…
