The End Of The F***ing World is nigh

The dark comedy starring Jessica Barden is back on Channel 4 for season 2, after series 1 left us in suspense

It’s the end of the world as we know it (again), and we feel fine…

The End Of The F***king World, episodes 1 & 2, Monday 4 November, 10pm, Channel 4/HD (CH 104/141). Also available for 7 days in Catch Up > Channels > All 4

When the finale of dark comedy The End Of The F***ing World aired two years ago, it left us with the mother of all cliffhangers. As the screen faded to black and a single gunshot rang out, we didn’t know whether we’d get a second season. Two years later, we’re finally getting closure – perhaps.

The series, based on Charles Forsman’s graphic novel, introduced us to 17-year-olds James (Alex Lawther, The Imitation Game), who thinks he’s a psychopath, and Alyssa (Jessica Barden, Penny Dreadful), who James decides will be his first human victim. It sounds bleak, but what follows is gripping and engaging, with minimal dialogue, quirky humour and an almost innocent love story, all set against a charming backdrop.

*WARNING: SPOILERS FOR SEASONS 1 & 2 FOLLOW*

This season begins two years later with new character Bonnie (Naomi Ackie, Lady Macbeth), who has just been released from prison and apparently has a connection to the man James killed in a brutal fashion in series 1.

Meanwhile, Alyssa, now 19, is trying to put her past behind her, but have her ghosts finally caught up with her? Also… what is she doing in a wedding dress and why has someone sent her a bullet in the post with her name (spelled incorrectly) carved into it?

Bonnie (Naomi Ackie) is a woman on a mission...

This season extends beyond the graphic novel, with Charlie Covell’s brilliant writing once more at the centre. Covell’s part of the mainly female creative team, which includes Lucy Forbes and Destiny Ekaragha, who directed the first and second blocks of the show, respectively. The incredible cinematography continues the show’s Twin Peaks/Fargo vibe and Blur’s Graham Coxon has returned to write and perform the original score and songs.

You can tune into the eight-part series for double-bills every night from Monday 4 November until Thursday 7 November, and also catch all the episodes on All 4 after Monday night’s double-bill.

But what happened to James? As we found out in episode two, he isn’t dead! Befitting this huge twist, Alex’s casting was so shrouded in secrecy, he was even banned from appearing at Comic Con. “They like to keep me in a little box until I can come out,” he laments.

While chatting to Alex and Jessica, it’s clear they wanted this reveal to really resonate with the fans… and for it to not be spoiled. Although they’re happy to tease what’s in store for the pair who continue their wrong place, wrong time misadventures, they’re quite rightly keeping tight-lipped on anything major.
