Check out our Wonder Women collection, which is full of strong, inspirational and influential female characters, actors and real women
By Laura Rutkowski, Staff Writer
Although International Women’s Day is on 8 March, we should celebrate women every single day. The movement for women’s rights has come a long way, but there is clearly more work to be done, and we all can play a part.
The theme this year is #ChooseToChallenge, which reminds us that it’s our responsibility to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We must also make an active effort to celebrate women’s achievements, which helps to create a more inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.
We’ve highlighted a series of #ChooseToChallenge moments from the shows in our Wonder Women collection that allow us to consider our own thoughts, actions, feelings and perceptions.
Everything begins with a dialogue, but if you’re not sure how to broach the topic, stick on one of these programmes – the issues they raise are a good place to start in order to open up the conversation.
High Fidelity
Find it in On Demand > Box Sets > Wonder Women
Nick Hornby’s book is reworked for a modern audience with a fourth wall-breaking story that focuses on Robyn “Rob” Brooks (Zoë Kravitz), a record store owner in Brooklyn. She tells the viewers about her “Top Five Heartbreaks” through music and pop culture as she tries to get over the “one who got away”.
PEN15
Find it in On Demand > Box Sets > Wonder Women
Dubbed a “cringe comedy”, PEN15’s hilarity factor is largely down to Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle’s performances. The comics, who are in their 30s, play their younger 13-year-old selves as they navigate high school in the year 2000. Meanwhile, their fellow students are all played by actual teenagers. We shudder to think what reliving those awkward years would be like, but props to them for doing it and making a brilliant series out of it!
In real life, Maya and Anna are just as close, and were even pregnant at the same time. Maya captioned a photo of them both on her Instagram with: “BFFs making some future BFFs.”
Parks And Recreation
Find it in On Demand > Box Sets > Wonder Women
If you’re a fan of The Office US and know the words off by heart already, you probably gravitated towards Parks And Recreation next. Amy Poehler stars as Leslie Knope, a government official who works in the Parks Department of Pawnee, a fictional town in Indiana. The colourful characters are lovingly brought to life through standout acting from Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Rob Lowe, Adam Scott, Rashida Jones and more.
Briarpatch
Find it in On Demand > Box Sets > Wonder Women
Based on Ross Thomas’ novel of the same name featuring detective Ben Dill, Briarpatch the series instead follows Allegra Dill. She’s an investigator working for a senator, but when her sister is killed in a car bombing, she returns home to San Bonifacio, Texas to solve her murder.
Inside The Ambulance: Wonder Women
Find it in On Demand > Box Sets > Wonder Women
Paramedics are unsung heroes who go largely unrecognised for the incredible work they do on a daily basis. This International Women’s Day one-off special features interviews with the outstanding women who have appeared on Inside The Ambulance over the past five years. For the first time, they’re seen off duty and at home, as well as on the job. Cameras inside the ambulance and the body-mounted cameras they wear capture how they respond to emergencies around Britain.
The White Princess
Find it in On Demand > Box Sets > Wonder Women
Based on Philippa Gregory’s novel, The White Princess is set after the War of the Roses, when Elizabeth of York (Jodie Comer, Killing Eve) is forced to marry King Henry VII (Jacob Collins-Levy, Young Wallander). The White Queen from 2013 is a loose prequel to this.
Hillary
Find it in On Demand > Box Sets > Wonder Women
Featuring never-before-seen footage from Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, this four-part documentary provides rich insights into her life and career. Across 35 hours of interviews, the former First Lady, who was also the first female senator of New York, opens up about everything from Bill’s affair to her nomination for president.
But wait, there’s more!
