Who run the world? Girls!

Who run the world? Girls!

Check out our Wonder Women collection, which is full of strong, inspirational and influential female characters, actors and real women

By Laura Rutkowski, Staff Writer

Although International Women’s Day is on 8 March, we should celebrate women every single day. The movement for women’s rights has come a long way, but there is clearly more work to be done, and we all can play a part.

The theme this year is #ChooseToChallenge, which reminds us that it’s our responsibility to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We must also make an active effort to celebrate women’s achievements, which helps to create a more inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.

We’ve highlighted a series of #ChooseToChallenge moments from the shows in our Wonder Women collection that allow us to consider our own thoughts, actions, feelings and perceptions.

Everything begins with a dialogue, but if you’re not sure how to broach the topic, stick on one of these programmes – the issues they raise are a good place to start in order to open up the conversation.

High Fidelity

Nick Hornby’s book is reworked for a modern audience with a fourth wall-breaking story that focuses on Robyn “Rob” Brooks (Zoë Kravitz), a record store owner in Brooklyn. She tells the viewers about her “Top Five Heartbreaks” through music and pop culture as she tries to get over the “one who got away”.

PEN15

Dubbed a “cringe comedy”, PEN15’s hilarity factor is largely down to Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle’s performances. The comics, who are in their 30s, play their younger 13-year-old selves as they navigate high school in the year 2000. Meanwhile, their fellow students are all played by actual teenagers. We shudder to think what reliving those awkward years would be like, but props to them for doing it and making a brilliant series out of it!

In real life, Maya and Anna are just as close, and were even pregnant at the same time. Maya captioned a photo of them both on her Instagram with: “BFFs making some future BFFs.”

Paramedics are unsung heroes who go largely unrecognised for the incredible work they do on a daily basis. This International Women’s Day one-off special features interviews with the outstanding women who have appeared on Inside The Ambulance over the past five years. For the first time, they’re seen off duty and at home, as well as on the job. Cameras inside the ambulance and the body-mounted cameras they wear capture how they respond to emergencies around Britain.
