Find out what’s occurrin’ with one of the television events of the year…
Gavin & Stacey, Christmas Day, TBC, BBC One HD (CH 101/108). Also available for 30 days in Catch Up > Channels > BBC iPlayer
When Gavin & Stacey star James Corden announced in May that the sitcom he created with Ruth Jones was returning for the first time in nearly a decade for a festive special, it’s fair to say millions of us went bonkers.
And why wouldn’t we? After all, the BAFTA-winning show about the romance between a Welsh lass and an Essex lad pulled in over ten million viewers when BBC One aired the series 3 finale on New Year’s Day 2010. Not bad for a sleeper hit that started life on BBC Three.
But what’s happened to Gavin (Mathew Horne), Stacey (Joanna Page), Nessa (Jones) and Smithy (Corden) in the time since we last saw them? And what about the likes of Mick (Larry Lamb), Pamela (Alison Steadman), Bryn (Rob Brydon) and Gwen (Melanie Walters)? We’re about to find out.
“Over the last ten years we've talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey – where they might be today and what their lives might look like,” said Corden and Jones. “And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one-hour special. We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again, and bringing the characters back together has been a joy.”
In terms of what to expect from this one-off special, details remain sketchy, but the last time we caught up with the gang Stacey was finally pregnant, Smithy and Nessa had a reconciliation of sorts and all seemed to be well with the world. Who knows what 2019 will bring?
You’ll have to wait until this hugely anticipated special airs on BBC One on Christmas Day to find out exactly what’s happened to the characters, but what has happened to the stars of the show this past decade? Here, we take a look at what Corden, Jones and the rest of the cast have been up to since 2010. Click/hover on each cast member to find out more.
