Smurf’s up! It was one of this year’s biggest family hits and it sees the tiny blue fellas (and one little lady) go on an epic journey to discover a strange new tribe of Smurfs
Smurfs: The Lost Village, available from 16 December in Sky Cinema on demand. Also available in HD. Cert U
This is less of a sequel to 2013’s The Smurfs 2 and more a reboot, abandoning all the live-action elements for a fully – and gorgeously – animated world. It’s got magically flowing rivers that run in mid-air and fluorescent, glow-in-the-dark animals and plants. Yes, you’d better get your Avatar jokes ready again because this definitely bears a resemblance to that sci-fi smash – but it’s much friendlier for the under-tens.
The adventure through this spectacular landscape begins after Smurfette (pop star Demi Lovato) spots a Smurf-like, but unfamiliar, creature outside her home village. She sets off in search of the stranger, determined to learn where they came from, accompanied by Brainy Smurf (Community’s Danny Pudi), Clumsy Smurf (30 Rock’s Jack McBrayer) and Hefty Smurf (Magic Mike’s Joe Manganiello). That cast brings a sprinkling of grown-up laughs as well as kiddie thrills, but this is an exuberant, warm-hearted and colourful world that kids in particular are going to love.
